To My Husband on Our 19th Wedding Anniversary

Nineteen years of marriage. It boggles my mind, since in many ways it seems like that rainy, nerve-wracking day was not so long ago. In 19 years, we’ve moved way too many times. We’ve seen the sublime from the top of the mountain and we’ve stood at the gates of Hell itself.  We’ve loved, and laughed, and hurt, and fought with each other, and FOR each other. We’ve survived. And we’ve grown up. (Mostly.)

I came across this song not too long ago, and I couldn’t help thinking it could have been written for us. So, this is for my husband, for all that you are to me, for all we’ve learned, and done, and survived. And to the next 50 years.

The Voyage

The Voyage
I am a sailor, you’re my first mate

We signed on together, we coupled our fate

We hauled up our anchor, determined not to fail

For the hearts treasure, together we set sail

With no maps to guide us we steered our own course

We rode out the storms when the winds were gale force

We sat out the doldrums in patience, and hope

Working together, we learned how to cope

Chorus:

Life is an ocean, love is a boat

In troubled waters, it keeps us afloat

When we started the voyage, there was just me and you

Now gathered round us, we have our own crew
Together we’re in this relationship

We built it with care, to last the whole trip

Our true destination’s not marked on any charts

We’re navigating for the shores of the heart

Chorus:

Life is an ocean and love is a boat

In troubled waters, it keeps us afloat

When we started the voyage, there was just me and you

Now gathered round us, we have our own crew.
